Abstract
Based on historiography publications and field investigations, the present article is an attempt to sketch the biography of Emanuel Logothetti, acting chairman of the Organizing Commitee of the 1871 Putna Celebration. Very little was written about him.
He was born in Șirăuții de Jos, Bukovina, in a family of old Byzantine origins, and studied at the famous Obergymnasium in Cernăuți, then at the Law School of the Vienna University. In Vienna, he decided, together with writers Mihai Eminescu and Ioan Slavici, to bring together the Romanian students in the city, who were at the time organized in two academic societies. He was electe d vice-chairman of the new society, România Jună (“Young Romania”). He participated in the preparations for the Putna Celebration as one of the three “fathers of the celebration idea” and was elected chairman of the Organizing Committee. He was the one who raised the funds for the event. Yet, after the bank went bankrupt and the funds were lost, the celebration was postponed and, in the end, he was not among the participants to the event. In the autumn of year 1871, he returned to Șirăuții de Jos, fell ill and shortly after he passed away.
