The First Documented Name Mention in the History of Liturgical Music in Moldavia

Abstract

The present article presents the oldest documented mention of a chanter’s name in the history of the Principality of Moldavia and the sole such mention in the 15th century. A certain Gheorghe Srpina ("of the Serbian”), probably a Serbian refugee, writes in 1454 and 1456 two charters by which Prince Petru Aron makes donations to Humor Monastery. In the former, the writer presents himself as a chanter (пѣвецъ).
