Bishop Benedict “of the Land of Moldavia”

Abstract

A recently-published document dating back to 1642 reveals that the hegumen of the Glavacioc Monastery in Wallachia, named Benedict, had previously been a “bishop in the Land of Moldavia”. The present paper reconstitutes his biography: he was first the Bishop of Vad, in Transylvania, and then Bishop of Roman, in Moldavia. He entered monastic life at Sucevița Monastery, remaining closely tied to it and always arduously protecting its interests. The reason for his departing from Moldavia is yet unknown.
