Stephen the Great as an “Austrian Agent”. A Perspective on the Propaganda of the Central Powers in Romania (1914–1916)

Abstract

The text is partially based on the results of a research regarding the propaganda that the Central Powers carried out in Romania in 1914–1916. Within the framework of propaganda actions, significant historical personalities of the Romanian past were used, one of them being Stephen the Great. Due to the popularity and the prestige he enjoyed, both among the Romanians in the Kingdom and those in the territories that were part of foreign state entities, Stephen the Great relatively quickly emerged as a landmark of these propaganda actions conducted to influence the public opinion, especially through a part of the Romanian press subordinated to the interests of the Central Powers.
