Abstract
This article presents evidence regarding the existence of a syntactic category for the Papadic genre in Old Byzantine Chant, which could be named: "Four-Meter Phrase”. This fact might constitute a key to understanding the rhythmical and metrical principles of exegesis in Middle-Byzantine notation. The paper also analyses some instances of short exegesis for the Papadic genre, in Kievan notation.
