Abstract
The motivation of the present study was the discovery in the fund “Guvernământul cezaro-crăiesc al Bucovinei” of the Central National Historical Archives from Bucharest of some novel documents regarding the bell tower of Putna Monastery, which was built in the second half of the 19th century. The initiative of building a new bell tower belonged to the Greek-Oriental Consistory of Bukovina, as a consequence of the degradation of the old one, made of wood. The whole process started in 1848 and involved the abbot of the monastery, the Consistory, the Putna brotherhood and the Government of Bukovina. After two technical documentations were rejected, the construction work started in 1881 based on a project by Hermann Bergmann, counselor at the Research and Conservation of Historical and Art Monuments Central Commission from Vienna. The Greek-Oriental Religious Fund sponsored the construction, which was finished in 1886.
