The Missal from Sucevița, 1607 – A Rediscovered Manuscript

Abstract

In the old Romanian book section of the “Dinicu Golescu” Argeș County Library there is a parchment manuscript in Slavonic, purchased in 2004 from a private person, manuscript which up to 1944 belonged to the Sucevița Monastery. The manuscript is a copy of Macarius’ Missal, made in 1607 on the commission of Prince Ieremia Movilă. It has 126 numbered folios, in quarto, with frontispieces and initials ornamented with intertwined geometric and vegetal motives. It once had red leather covers. We do not know the manuscript’s whereabouts between 1944 and 2004. Given its long age and its intricate itinerary in the past century it is in a good conservation state and it can now be exhibited to the public.
