Prince Stephen the Great at Moncastro

Abstract

After the Turks conquered the citadels Kilia and Moncastro in the summer of 1484 there was an attempt by the ruler of Moldavia, Stephen the Great, to retake the latter. Up to now this attempt was documented only by the Ottoman chronicles. The author confirms their account with the aid of a European source, a memoir from July–August 1486 attributed to the diplomat Filippo Buonaccorsi Callimachus, who was in Venice at the time.
