The Unveiling of the Statue of Stephen the Great in Iași – A Moment of National Effervescence

Abstract

This paper reviews the preparatory work and the elevation in Iași, in June 1883, of the equestrian statue of Stephan the Great, based on the articles from the local mass media of the time. The articles underlined the characteristics of the national manifestation, the presence of King Carol I, that of the representatives of the legislative bodies and the government and of some members of the diplomacy. Towns, communities, simple people from all over the country contributed to the celebration by sending their garlands, thus outlining the wish for national unity under the symbol of Stephen the Great and the Hohenzollern dynasty.
