Abstract
Recently a massive memoir, belonging to the Dominican monk Martin Gruneweg (1562 – ca. 1618), was edited. In one of his travels towards the Ottoman Empire, namely the one from 1582, while passing through Moldavia, he often saw pillars on former battlefields or on the spots where „great personalities” perished. The note is accompanied by a sketch which renders exactly such a commemorating pillar. This source is confronted with testimonies from other sources referring either to Moldavia or to Wallachia.
