Abstract

It is difficult for researchers to analyze the history of relations between Moldavia and Moscow, mostly because the Moldavian documents from old Moscow archives were lost to fire. It is known that the unfortunate destruction took place in the 17th century, but no one has ever described those documents or has spoken of their place of preservation. By using the opisi of the oldest Moscow archives—The Royal Archive and the Archives of the Posolski Prikaz—we show in this study that all Moldavian documents (except one) and the most precious Wallachian Posolski Books were lost in the fire of 1626.
